Xiaomi has confirmed that some older smartphones may be eligible for upgraded replacement batteries with larger capacities than their original factory cells. The update originated from comments by a Xiaomi REDMI product manager and follows an official battery upgrade service already launched in China.
Battery upgrades available now for select Xiaomi 13 models
China’s official program covers the Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The service is priced at 189 yuan (about $26 USD) and includes the upgraded battery and labor. Xiaomi says the replacement packs use newer high-density battery technology, allowing higher capacity without increasing physical size and delivering noticeably better endurance for those older flagships after replacement.
Limited to China for now, global expansion uncertain
Although the company signalled that several older models could receive improved replacement batteries, Xiaomi clarified the upgrade won’t apply to every device and the program is currently restricted to China. Because the service relies on official service centers and certified components, a regional rollout would require additional infrastructure and approvals. Many users outside China — particularly owners of recent flagships such as the Xiaomi 13 and 14 series and various REDMI and POCO models — are hoping the option will be made available internationally, as battery replacement could be a cost-effective alternative to buying new phones.
Key takeaway
Xiaomi has introduced a higher-capacity battery replacement option in China and indicated some older models could receive upgraded cells with greater endurance. The paid service is currently limited to China, and global rollout has not been announced.
